Frequently Asked Questions
How much can PDF size be reduced?
Results depend on the original PDF. PDFs full of uncompressed high-res images can shrink 50-80%. Text-heavy PDFs typically shrink 5-20% from object stream optimization and metadata stripping. Already-optimized PDFs may grow slightly.
Does compression reduce quality?
High mode is lossless — only the PDF structure is optimized. Medium and lower modes recompress embedded JPEG/PNG images, which slightly reduces image quality but is usually imperceptible. Vector text and shapes are never rasterized.
Why didn't my file get smaller?
If the PDF was already heavily optimized by its creator (e.g., exported from modern word processors with "Save as PDF" using default settings), there may be little to gain. Try a lower quality setting — that often helps when structural optimization is exhausted.
Is my PDF safe?
Yes. All processing happens locally in your browser using pdf-lib. Your file never leaves your device.
